"5 Friends From Japan" Exhibit at the Portland Childrens Museum
Starting Friday, October 6th

Make Friends in Japan... without a passport! October 6 - January 15th.

This interactive exhibit is designed to advance understanding and appreciation of Asian culture with true stories and real objects straight from Japan. The exhibit is ideally suited for ages 5 – 10, while younger children will enjoy its roleplaying and dress-up components. Step inside a Japanese classroom and "meet" five contemporary Japanese children. After exploring the classroom, "follow" your new friends home where you can practice aikido moves in Yusuke's Yard, or role-play with Japanese food in Aisa's Kitchen and Tofu Shop. Dress up in traditional Japanese attire in Sakiko's bedroom, experiment with Japanese calligraphy Ken's tatami room, and listen to many kinds of Japanese music in Shoko's living room.

Five Friends From Japan is an exhibit designed to increase visitors' awareness of Asian cultures. Children and families are invited to visit the homes of these five friends and learn about their lives by experiencing their stories.

EXHIBIT AREAS:

Schoolyard and Classroom
Here you are introduced to the five students who serve as your guides throughout the exhibit. You are invited to visit their homes to learn more about their interests, families and neighborhoods through video narratives and hands-on activities in this simulated Japanese classroom.

Aisa's Kitchen /Tofu Shop
Role-playing and Japanese cuisine are on the menu in Aisa's Kitchen and Tofu Shop. With Aisa's help, you will fill up on information about the variety of foods and eating habits in Japan, and learn about traditional festivals that take place in the town where she lives.

Yuske's Yard
In Yusuke's Yard youths of all ages can practice aikido moves with the help of an instructor. In the garden, you will learn about Japanese garden design, and that not all Japanese gardens are pristinely manicured and designed for meditation. Yusuke's yard is filled with Yusuke's bug collection and sports equipment.

Sakiko's Bedroom
Dress up in traditional Japanese attire in Sakiko's Bedroom, model Asian fashions and check out real Japanese manga, or comics. An only child and owner of many pets, Sakiko highlights popular culture and emphasizes that Japanese girls' bedrooms look a lot like their American counterparts.

Ken's Tatami Room
In Ken's Tatami Room, visitors are invited to experiment with Japanese calligraphy, try out futon bedding and learn about traditional home architecture and materials, such as tatami, a straw matting used as floor covering. As the oldest of four siblings with a Japanese father and American mother, Ken shares details about his family and his love of baseball and Harry Potter.

Shoko's Living Room
Shoko's Living Room invites you to listen to and create different types of Japanese music. Shoko, from an elite and culturally conservative family, shares her shell and stone collections. While hanging out, children may notice that Shoko's living room looks a lot like their own here in the United States.

Programming
To augment the exhibit experience, the Museum will offer origami and calligraphy workshops, live koto performances, martial arts, Japanese folk tales and more.
