Review From Booklist:
Waters' elegant collection explores the lives of Japanese women, many of whom are dealing with the aftermath of World War II. The women in these stories have lost their husbands and children during the war, and are now coping with having to see the enemy present in their country. In "Shibusa," a young woman who lost both her beloved husband and her son in a bombing runs across a much-changed friend of her husband. Makiko takes her beloved son, Toshi, to a festival in "Aftermath," only to find that it's nothing like the festivals of her childhood. To Makiko's dismay, Toshi takes candy from Western soldiers while she fights to make him remember his dead father. In "The Laws of Evening," a woman facing the twilight of her life finds her own company preferable to that of others as she contemplates the deaths of her twin daughters so many years before. Quiet and thoughtful, Waters' stories present an intriguing, multifaceted portrait of Japan in the years after the war up to modern times.

My name is Roland Kelts, and I am the half Japanese author of a new book called Japanamerica: How Japanese Pop Culture has Invaded the US (www.japanamericabook.com), published by Palgrave Macmillan in the US and
Europe, and by Random House Kodansha in Japanese translation in Japan. I am based in Tokyo and New York, and I am a lecturer at the University of Tokyo.
I was a very satisfied JET program participant based in Osaka in 1998/99.
I am writing to you now because I am in the middle of a book tour and will be making an appearance in Portland.
I will speak at Powell's City of Books on March 27:

I recently delivered lectures to the Japan America Society of Washington, DC, Keidanren and the JICC at the Embassy of Japan, and all three appearances were very enjoyable and stimulating. I want to invite you and your members to my Portland presentation in the event you might be
interested in attending. I would love to greet some fellow JET alumni there, especially if they are keen. |
