JETAA Portland’s Calendar is from April to March. Below are the yearly activities:

Hanami Picnic and New Officer Announcements
Date: Saturday, April 04, 2009
Description: A picnic in the park to celebrate the cherry blossoms and introduce the new chapter officers and committee chairpersons. This event is attended by JETAA members and our J-Kaiwa friends. Together participants relax and enjoy food and soak-up the spring weather – as well as learn the cultural signficance and importance that hanami has on Japanese culture. This is a potluck style event and JETAA provides picnic supplies.

Pre Departure Orientation
Date: Saturday, June 27, 2009
Description: JETAA coordinates the Pre-Departure orientation every year as a means to prepare new teachers for the JET Program. The insights and first hand knowledge of previous alumni at this event has always aided in making sure that new teachers from the chapter are fully prepared and confident for their experience on JET.

Japanese Lessons
Date: Once a week from June 27 to July 31, 2009
Description: JETAA hosts survival Japanese lessons for the newly departing JETs. This is a weekly class introducing basic Japanese to JETs who have no prior experience with Japan. The lessons start the week following pre-departure orientation and conclude the week prior to them departing for Tokyo. GIA funding is used to pay basic expenditures for room rental, supplies and a teacher stipend including parking.

Iron Chef Competition
Date: Saturday, May 9, 2009
Description: This popular annual event brings together JETAA, J-Kaiwa friends, members of the Consulate General of Japan in Portland and members of the Japanese community. It is a potluck style event where participants bring a Japanese food item that they learned to prepare while on JET. Judges award prizes for the best dish in 3 categories. This year our event featured sake tasting from Sake One, the only American owned sakery in the world. We also featured koi nobori to symbolize boys day. The event promotes Japanese culture, education and food as well as strengthens the bond between JETAA, Consulate staff, and members of the Japanese community.

Sayonara BBQ
Date: Saturday, July 18, 2009
Description: A picnic in the park, held to let soon departing JETs and their families meet JETAA members and ask last minute questions about preparing for Japan. It is also intended for newly departing JETs to meet their peers and begin to build a network before they depart as well as promote becoming involved in JETAA when they return. We have ice breakers and games. This is a potluck style event but JETAA provides the base supply of food and picnic supplies.

JETAA Masters Golf Tournament
Date: Saturday, August 15, 2009
Description: The Golf Tournament includes members of JETAA, Consulate Staff and J-Kaiwa friends. It is a pitch and put course with teams playing best ball. The winning team gets the distinction of wearing the Sugoi green jacket. The event promotes relations between JETAA and Consulate General of Japan staff.

US National Conference
Date: Thursday, August 20 – Sunday 23, 2009
Description: The US National Conference will be hosted by the Chicago chapter. JETAA Portland will be sending 2 representatives, the treasurer and the webmaster.

Festival Japan and Welcome Back Event
Date: Saturday, September 26, 2009
Description: This event begins at Uwajimaya, a local Japanese grocery and department store. The festival features booths with Japan related items and has two stages where there are performances of Japanese culture such as taiko, karate, kendo, traditional music and dance. At the conclusion of the festival members newly returned JETs are welcomed and introduced to JETAA in hopes they will become involved.

Halloween Social
Date: Saturday, October 24, 2009
Description: The Halloween social is attended by JETAA members and J-Kaiwa friends and members of the Japanese community. It is an opportunity to introduce a traditional American holiday to Japanese members of the community by dressing in costumes. A costume contest is held with prizes awarded for Best Japanese Themed Costume and Best Overall Costume.

Bounenkai
Date: Saturday, December 05, 2009
Description: This popular annual event is attended by JETAA member and J-Kaiwa friends. It is held at a local Japanese restaurant that has authentic floor seating on tatami mats. After a dinner of sukiyaki, prepared at the table by participants in traditional Japanese style, there is a white elephant gift exchange where members contribute Japanese omiyage items. The restaurant also has a separate lounge area for our karaoke ni-ji-kai with Japanese and English sings. It is an excellent opportunity to support a local Japanese business, practice Japanese language and reflect on Japanese traditions.

Shinnenkai
Date: Saturday, January 30, 2010
Description: This popular annual event is attended by JETAA member and J-Kaiwa friends. Members welcome in the new year and experience a Japanese cultural event. There is a raffle drawing with prizes that have been donated by local business that JETAA has supported through volunteering and otherwise, such as the Portland Japanese Garden.

Japanese Movie Night
Date: TBD – February 2010
Description: JETAA members and J-Kaiwa friends are invited to watch a movie in Japanese with English subtitles. It is a potluck style event but JETAA provides snacks and supplies.

J-Kaiwa Japanese Conversation Club
Date: First Friday of every month
Description: Once a month JETAA members and J-Kaiwa friends (often Japanese members in the community) meet to speak in Japanese. The purpose of J-Kaiwa is to help members refresh their Japanese speaking and communication skills and to network with Japanese in the community.

Book Club
Date: Every month
Description: The JETAA book club is attended by JETAA members. Book selections are chosen by those in attendance. Once a month the book club members meet to discuss a book either written by a Japanese author or about Japan. Occaisonally the book club reads bilingual books. The purpose of the book club is to study Japanese literature, culture, history and language.

The Portland Chapter of JETAA (The JET Program Alumni Association) was created to serve the bonds of friendship developed by the program participants. JETAA’s purpose is to achieve, through its activities, a broader and deeper understanding between Japan and the other countries participating in the program.
