Candidates for President:

Jeffrey Houser

My name is Jeffrey Houser and I was an ALT Wakayama prefecture. I have been actively involved with JETAA Portland since 2012 and as candidate for president 2015-2016, I plan to continue to find ways to connect with our large and diverse group of JETAlumni in Portland, as well as continuing to be an active part of the Japanese community.

Over the past two years, I have been coordinating events, volunteering and  participating in numerous JETAA activities. As president over the past year, I believe we made strides in extending our connections into the community and increased participation in many of the events. I believe we can build on these successes in the coming year and continue to have a positive impact on promoting international understanding between Japan and Oregon.

I look forward to collaborating with the JETAA Portland leadership that puts these great events together and to continue to establish

positive connections with the Japanese community in Greater Portland and beyond. As president, my goals for 2015-2016 JETAA Portland would include:

  • collaborating with fellow officers to create more opportunities for Alumni members to participate in JETAA Portland activities
  • to promote and increase the professional network of JETAlumni
  • continue to create connections from our JETAA members into the community and between other chapters

Given the opportunity, I look forward to the challenges of a new year and serving as an officer of JETAA Portland. I will put my efforts to make even more positive contributions and work to achieve the goals of our chapter. I have really enjoyed being a part of this outstanding group of people and anticipate another great year

Thank you!

Candidates for Vice-President:

 GRPKMfUFMichael Richey

Hello! My name is Michael Richey and I was an ALT in Shiga-ken from 2008-2010. I have really appreciated being a part of JETAA Portland since I moved to the city last year. The chapter has offered me a lot of opportunities to make friends and experience many of the wonderful things Portland has to offer.

Last year, I volunteered at the JET Pre-Departure Meeting, the Japanese Garden’s O-Bon Festival, and the JET Interviews. I also helped organize the JETAA Career Panel with President Jeffrey Houser, which had a wonderful turnout.

If elected as Vice President, I want to become more involved in steering our chapter toward greater growth and connectivity. I want to work again on the Career Panel to improve the system set in place this year. I would also like to create opportunities for JET Alumni to network and find support throughout the year. I want to give back to this great chapter that has given so much to me.

Thank you and よろしくおねがいします!

Candidates for Treasurer:

Katie Richey

My name is Katie Richey and I was an ALT in Shiga Prefecture from 2007 – 2010. Shortly after moving to Oregon last spring, I became involved in JETAA Portland and have been very impressed with our chapter’s numerous activities and sense of inclusiveness.

From joining JETAA, I’ve had the opportunity to make new friends with JET alumni and Friends of JET, volunteer with the Japanese Garden and JASO’s Japan on the Road program, present at the Pre-Departure Orientation for new JETs, practice Japanese at J-Kaiwa, network with professionals, and just feel at home in my new state.

I hope to become more involved in JETAA Portland through serving as the chapter Treasurer. My aim is to ensure financial support of our activities by maintaining contact with the Consular Office of Japan and CLAIR. Our former Treasurers have demonstrated great fiscal responsibility, thus making our chapter strong, and I intend to continue their practices.

Thank you and yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

Candidates for Secretary:

Matt Krzyzynski

I came to Portland last year not really knowing anyone or how best to get started. I feel so lucky to have found JETAA and be offered the opportunity to be Secretary this past year. Since I’ve started in this position, I’ve done my best to make sure that everyone stays in the loop with new information. I’ve attended all of the meetings since joining and have sent out the minutes as quickly as possible to ensure everyone has a heads up about upcoming events or volunteer opportunities.

Going forward, I hope to give new returnees that same kind of support that I received. JETAA provides such a great opportunity for networking and staying connected to Japan. I love that everyone in this group looks out for each other and does their best to help out whenever possible. I’d like to continue working to make our presence more well known in the Japanese community and helping to improve communication with current and prospective members.

Thanks and yoroshiku!

The Portland Chapter of JETAA (The JET Program Alumni Association) was created to serve the bonds of friendship developed by the program participants. JETAA’s purpose is to achieve, through its activities, a broader and deeper understanding between Japan and the other countries participating in the program.
