Candidates for President:

Brooke Muetzel

My name is Brooke Muetzel and I’m excited to be your 2012 Presidential candidate for JETAA Portland.  I was an ALT in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto-ken from 2004 to 2007.  For the past couple years I’ve been able to serve as JETAA Portland’s Secretary and President.  I really enjoy being involved in JETAA’s many events throughout the year and having a presence in Portland’s Japanese community.

My goals for this year include:

  • increase member involvement
  • provide more professional, social, and cultural opportunities to members and the community
  • partner with other local Japan-affiliated organizations to increase community engagement and awareness
  • support future JETs before their departure to Japan

I truly believe in the transformative power of JET and would be proud to represent the JETAA Portland chapter again.

Thanks for your vote!

Brooke Muetzel

Candidates for Vice-President:

Brianna Harris
Yamagata Prefecture, 2008-2011

Just over six months ago I returned from Japan to come to Portland. I found a vibrant city, full of arts, music, and some of the best people I know. I also found a city with a strong, rich, and varied Japanese and Japanese American culture that through JETAA Portland I have slowly become acquainted with. Whether it’s Portland Taiko, Ikebana International, or the Nikkei Endowment, it seems that within the city of Portland there is always something happening that brings me back home to Japan. Here I have the opportunity to not only relax to a round of Karaoke with friends, but many opportunities to help inform those around me more about Japanese culture. As the JETAA Vice President I see opportunities for us as a whole to do much more for the Portland community. Just after returning me and Brooke Muetzel (the current JETAA President) started a small group called Career Seek where JET Alumni looking to find a new career, or change their current career path, can get together, share their resumes, and even occasionally hear from a professional on changing career tracks. Personally this group has provided me with the support I needed to keep revising and sending out my resume. Now, I would like to look into more opportunities for JETAA to help out around the community in meaningful ways–visiting elderly homes, talking to children at schools, and getting involved in building a stronger Portland community as well as a stronger JETAA community. Soon, I hope to have a JETAA forum up so that there can be more active communication within JETAA so all of our voices can be heard. The position of Vice President means a lot to me. I care.Thank you for considering me for Vice President. I look forward to seeing and meeting all of you soon.Sincerely,
Brianna Harris

Candidates for Treasurer:

Veronica Adversalo

My name is Veronica Adversalo and I was an ALT in Hyogo Prefecture.  Being involved with JETAA has given me the chance to meet and work with JETAA members from various chapters, get involved with Portland’s Japanese community, and help organize and participate in many local events.

In the past I have served JETAA Portland as Secretary, Vice President, and Treasurer.  I have also served as the Tabemashou! group coordinator for a year and a half.  This year, I hope to continue to serve our chapter as Treasurer.

One of my goals as Treasurer is to continue to work closely and maintain open communication with both the Japanese Consulate in Portland and CLAIR in New York.  I also hope to manage our finances in ways that support and advance our chapter, while continuing to be involved with JETAA events.

Thank you and yoroshiku onegaishimasu!

Veronica Adversalo
